A Brief History of Main Motorcar (Formerly Johnstown Dodge and H&P Motors)
George W. Kline began working for Howell & Pierson Inc. in 1918, doing wagon and buggy repair. With the advent of the automobile,the company began selling Hudson & Terraplane vehicles.
Main Motorcar's current location,224 West Main Street inJohnstown, NY,was originally built as a Baptist church. The current showroom remains part of the original church. Throughout the years, George bought neighboring properties to make more room for the growing dealership.
In 1936, Howell & Pierson Inc. became a Dodge dealership. In the 1950s,George started a second Dodge dealership in Gloversville, H&P Motors; the business was later sold to Nunzio Isabella, his son-in-law.When George passed away in 1964, his son Richard X. Kline took over Howell & Pierson Inc. in Johnstown.Â
H&P Motors and Howell & Pierson Inc. continued to grow and expand as separate businesses for many years. Ever evolving, Howell & Pierson Inc. changed its name to Johnstown Dodge in 1985. Both dealerships were passed down to the next generation, with Alex Isabella taking over as dealer for H&P Motors and George C. Kline as dealer for Johnstown Dodge.Â
The 2008 recession caused significant turmoil within the automobile industry. Alex and George surveyed the market and felt that they could better serve their customers if they merged the dealerships together back under one name. The two businesses reunited as one for the first time in 55 years. Jeep was added to the lineup of brands being sold, along with Ram Commercial Trucks and Vans.
With the merger of the two locations, the name was changed to Main Motorcar. The family business continues today with multiple generations working together at the dealership.Â
